AGRICULTURAL VALUE CHAIN

Written by John Iguoba ll

Ewo Market The Food Basket of Edo State.

Now that am affected let me cry out Loud. Over a month my produce have suffered set back giving me real value for it in terms of pricing. Any time am privileged to see thread of Tomato in our market all i see is business opportunities.

The picture below shows basin of tomatoes sold at N2000 each in Ewo Market Okpella town, Etsako East Local government Area, Edo State.

No wonder it is called the Food Basket of the State.

During the evening period, it can go as low as 1500 naira, but the sad news is that some women don't sell at all, they don't make a profit. The level of wastage in the locality and Nation is quite on the high side.

We know how tomatoes are costly in other states, yet middle men exporting to other neighbouring states keep telling farmers like us stories of no sales.

Let me suggest some areas I think the problem are emanating from.

The major issues of Agriculture in Nigeria is transportation and preservation.

Questions:
How do we preserve our crops?

How do we solve this problem, can technology work here?

Should we wait for government ?

You too can save Edo from this economic damage with your solutions.
