LAGOS PAYS SALARIES OF MASS LITERACY FACILITATORS, INSTRUCTORS


The Lagos State Government, through the Office of the Special Adviser on Education (OSAE), has disbursed the sum N63,189,000 as payment of six months salary arrears to facilitators and instructors of the various adult literacy and vocational centres under the Agency for Mass Literacy across the State.

The Permanent Secretary of OSAE, Dr. Shamsideen Olalekan Allison stated that the money covers salary arrears, monitoring and coordination funds for the Agency for Mass Literacy.

He noted the payment of the backlog salaries showed the magnanimity of the present administration under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and its resolve to further encourage the beneficiaries to put in their best in the service of the State government.

Allison added that the stipends paid by the State government will go a long way in enhancing the livelihood of beneficiaries and also assure them of the commitment of the government to their welfare.

The payment exercise which started on July 8, 2019, will end on July 16, 2019, and covers 916 Facilitators and 51 Vocational Instructors.

Speaking on the activities of the Office, the Director of Agency for Mass Literacy, Mrs. Kemi Kalesanwo stated that the Agency has the responsibility of enhancing the literacy level of residents, adding that there are 1,263 learning centres and five vocational centres in different locations in the State.

Kalesanwo disclosed that the efforts of the State Government at eradicating illiteracy is yielding positive results, stressing that the agency runs a sensitisation program called “Eko Nko Eko” meaning “Lagos is Learning” program and organises a yearly quiz competition to promote literacy and reading culture among the populace.

She stated that the advantage of the vocational and literacy education being championed by the Office “is that it is free and runs for nine months with consideration for flexible learning hours which includes evening and weekends classes”.
