SPORTS: Team Nigeria names 21 for African Skating Championship

By John Egbokhan

21 skaters are to represent Team Nigeria at the 2017 African Skating Championship holding from December 6 to 10 in Lome, Togo.

Unveiling the team yesterday at the National Stadium in Lagos, President of the Nigeria Roller Sports and Skating Federation, Comrade Joseph Evah, said the skaters were carefully from a pool of over 40 skaters at a rigorous camping exercise.

Evah, who is single-handedly funding the skaters trip to the maiden African Championship, where they are set to compete for honours with 21 other countries, promised to reward each gold winner with N200, 000.

According to frontline Niger Delta activist, the reward scheme was meant to motivate the skaters for peak performance at the African event, even as he clamoured for a better deal for Nigerian athletes.

‘’Each silver medal winner will  get N150, 000 while a bronze medal winner is guaranteed the sum of N100, 000. We need to encourage our athletes in every way possible in order for them to escape the pangs of poverty. ‘’I am confident that the athletes we have selected for this African Championship are the best around and are ready to bring back gold medals from Lome.

Our expectations are high and we are sending you out as good ambassadors of our great country’’, added Evah. He informed that Team Nigeria will be competing in male and female categories, specifically stating that events like team trials, sprint runs, relays and marathon have all been registered for by the Nigerian contingent.
