LAGOS TO EMBARK ON MONITORING OF WORKPLACE SAFETY COMPLIANCE
The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring occupational safety at the workplace through effective monitoring and enforcement of relevant rules and regulations to safeguard the rights of employees.
The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode made this known recently at a Law Symposium on Occupational Safety and Health Regulation, themed: “Achieving Workplace Safety In A Mega Smart City”, organized by the State Safety Commission in Lagos.
The Governor, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations, Dr. Jemilade Longe, noted that the symposium was initiated as part of efforts to comply with the ‘Working Without Accident’ policy agreed on during the world congress on safety and health launched in September this year in Singapore.
He added that the present administration was not only committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property but also to effectively react to emergency situations that may arise anywhere across the State.
Governor Ambode recalled that the Lagos State Safety Commission was rebranded a few weeks ago with the aim of creating greater awareness of safety issues that will help prevent avoidable loss of lives and property.
He maintained that special attention must be accorded the safety and health sectors, restating that the general wellbeing of Lagosians was paramount to the State government under his watch.
He, therefore, implored all safety stakeholders at the event to critically analyze the needed improvement in the safety sector, come up with suggestions and recommendations that would be considered and integrated into the Lagos State Safety regulation.
In his remarks, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, represented by a Director in the Ministry, Mr. Jide Martins commended the efforts being made by the present administration on zero-tolerance for lack of adequate safety in a workplace.
He advised that stakeholders in the private sector be carried along in the fight for safety and curative measures on workplace safety.
The Director-General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr. Hakeem Dickson said the law symposium, will help validate all documented regulations and make them legally binding on all Lagosians.
He urged employers to follow the safety and health rules and regulations in the workplace, adding that business owners who do not comply would be penalized.
Dickson also used the occasion to call on Lagosians to celebrate moderately and stay safe during the yuletide season.
