Sports: L.A. to host 2028 Summer Olympics

The City of Los Angeles will host the 2028 Summer Olympics after working out an agreement that will send the 2024 Summer Games to Paris.
An official announcement is expected to come from the International Olympic Committee later Monday, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Earlier this month, the IOC approved an atypical plan to award the 2024 and 2028 Olympic Games simultaneously, with the only question being the order between Paris and Los Angeles.
Paris officials have been adamant about not waiting an extra four years, according to the newspaper, and Los Angeles officials were more amenable to hosting in 2028.
It will mark the third time -- and first since 1984 -- that Los Angeles will host the Summer Games. L.A. also hosted in 1932. It also will be the first time the Summer Games are held on American soil since the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
MLB
-- Steve Bartman, once considered Public Enemy No. 1 among Chicago Cubs fans, received a ring from the team to commemorate the franchise's 2016 World Series championship.
Bartman, ostracized in Chicago for his role in the team's collapse in the 2003 National League Championship Series, was presented with the ring in the offices of team owner Tom Ricketts. Theo Epstein, the team's president of baseball operations, was among those at the ceremony.
"On behalf of the entire Chicago Cubs organization, we are honored to present a 2016 World Series Championship Ring to Mr. Steve Bartman," Ricketts and the Cubs said in a statement. "We hope this provides closure on an unfortunate chapter of the story that has perpetuated throughout our quest to win a long-awaited World Series.
"While no gesture can fully lift the public burden he has endured for more than a decade, we felt it was important Steve knows he has been and continues to be fully embraced by this organization. After all he has sacrificed, we are proud to recognize Steve Bartman with this gift today."
NHL
--Columbus Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella received a one-year contract extension, the team announced.
Financial terms were not disclosed by the club for Tortorella, who won the Jack Adams Award last season as the NHL's coach of the year. He is just the sixth coach in the league to win the award on multiple occasions, having also done so in 2004 with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Tortorella was entering the last season of a five-year, $10 million deal that he signed with the Vancouver Canucks in 2013. Columbus sent a draft pick to Vancouver in 2015 as compensation for hiring Tortorella.
"I'm very appreciative of the opportunity I have to coach this team and be part of a wonderful community that has been very welcoming to my family, so I thank the McConnell family, Mike Priest (president), John Davidson (president of hockey operations), Jarmo Kekalainen (general manager), our staff and the entire organization," Tortorella said in a statement. "I'm proud of the steps we've taken as a team and I look forward to continuing to work with a very good group of coaches and players."
--The Buffalo Sabres signed defenseman Nathan Beaulieu to a two-year, $4.8 million contract, the team announced.
Buffalo acquired Beaulieu from the Montreal Canadiens last month after the 24-year-old posted career-high totals in goals (four), assists (24), points (28) and games played (74) last season.
The Canadiens received the Sabres' third-round pick (68th overall) in the 2017 NHL draft in the trade.
Beaulieu collected 60 points (seven goals, 53 assists) in 225 career games since being selected by Montreal with the 17th overall pick of the 2011 draft.
NBA
--The Milwaukee Bucks re-signed restricted free agent guard Tony Snell, the team announced.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed by the club for Snell, who set career highs in points (8.5), rebounds (3.1), assists (1.2) and minutes (29.2) per game last season. The 25-year-old also set personal bests in both 3-point percentage (40.6) and field goal percentage (45.5) last season.
"I'm grateful to the Bucks ownership and everyone in the organization for believing in me," Snell said. "We're building something special here and I'm fortunate to work with great coaches and teammates. I can't wait to get the season started and continue our positive momentum from last season."
Snell has averaged 6.2 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 293 career games since being selected by the Chicago Bulls with the 20th overall pick of the 2013 draft.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
--Western Kentucky freshman center Mitchell Robinson has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules, the school announced.
The 6-foot-11 Robinson left campus Wednesday night without telling anyone at the university after enrolling in summer classes earlier this month, sources told the Bowling Green Daily News.
Robinson went through three practices last week as the Hilltoppers prepared for an Aug. 7-14 trip to Costa Rica, where they will play three games. Coaches were unaware of the McDonald's All-American's absence until he did not report for a workout Thursday.
A source told ESPN that Robinson doesn't want to play at Western Kentucky and that he would be OK transferring or sitting out this year.
GOLF
--President Donald Trump accepted an invitation to be honorary chairman of the 2017 Presidents Cup this fall, the PGA Tour announced.
The Presidents Cup returns to the United States for the 12th staging at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, N.J., from Sept. 26 to Oct. 1.
Trump will become the 11th worldwide leader to serve in the position since the biennial event's inception in 1994. Presidents Bill Clinton (2000) and George W. Bush (2005) both held the role while in office, and Barack Obama did so in 2009 and 2013, the last time the tournament was held in the United States.
"It is a great honor for me to be even a small part of the Presidents Cup," Trump said. "I have watched it since the very first tournament in 1994. It gets better with age. This will be the greatest of them all."
--American Lexi Thompson inched closer to the top spot in the Rolex Women's Golf Rankings.
The 22-year-old Thompson vaulted past Thailand's Ariya Jutanugarn to reach a career-best No. 2 ranking. She moved up to No. 4 in May and reached No. 3 earlier this month.
Thompson has posted 26 top-10 finishes in her last 45 tournaments, posting three victories and placing second six times on the LPGA Tour in that span.
So Yeon Ryu of South Korea maintained the top spot in the rankings for the sixth consecutive week. Jutanugarn, who spent two weeks at No. 1 last month after ending the 84-week reign of Lydia Ko, fell to third.
TENNIS
--Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci survived a three-set match in the opening round of the Generali Open at Kitzbuhel, Austria.
Bellucci, who has won four career titles on clay, was pushed to the limit in a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 over Alexandr Dolgopolov of the Ukraine.
The Brazilian had nine aces and saved five of seven break-point chances, including two in the sixth game of the decisive set. He will face sixth-seeded Jan-Lennard or veteran Tommy Haas in the second round.
Joao Sousa of Portugal also needed three sets to win his match, losing a first-set tiebreaker before rallying for a 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-3 victory over Mikhail Youzhny of Russia.
